History in a timeline

Chronology or putting things in the right order is very important in history. It includes the study of earth and its geology or the historical events of a place. Here we have tried to present Khulna’s important events in a time line. This is an ongoing process.

527-575

Gopchandra, Dharmaditya and Sadachardev were the kings of Jessore and Khulna.

1419

Khan Jahan Ali (Khan-I-Jahan) a Muslim saint came to Bengal.

1459

Khan Jahan Ali died in Mosque City of Bagerhat.

1545

Muhammad Khan Sur appointment as governor of Bangla by Emperor Islam Shah Suri of the Sur Empire.

1553

Muhammad Khan Sur declared independence from Delhi following death of Islam Shah Sur.

Effectively established the weakening Bengal Sultanate by starting his own dynasty.

1766

Khulna has been identified as ‘Kulania’ or Kalania.

From the records of the sailors of a British Merchant ship called Falmouth , which stranded in the southern on (Sogar Bank, Bengal) part of the Pashur river on 13.6.1766.

1572-1576

The state of Jessore was established soon after Daud Khan's regain to the throne of Karrani dynasty.

He was the last ruler of Bengal's Karrani dynasty as well as the final Sultanate of Bengal .

1781

The East India Company opened a "court" in Moorly near Chanchra and ruled most of Jessore, Faridpur and Khulna.

Mr. Tillman Henkel was the first collector.

1786

Establishment of Charlieganj or Saheber Hat now Boro Bazzar at Khulna

The bazar was named after an indigo planter Mr. Charlie, who was the founded this market.

1795

An English man named Mr. Bond built the first indigo factory in Jessore.

It was at Rupadia and was established with the permission of the District Board of Jessore. The ruins of factory are still found on the shores of Bhairab.

1842

Khulna was turned into a subdivision.

This is the first subdivision in undivided Bengal. The whole of Bagerhat, Jessore Sadar and parts of Narail were under Khulna subdivision at that time. Mr. Westland said that a subdivision was formed in Khulna to keep Mr. William Henry Sneyd Rainey under control.

1849

Robert Morrell started indigo business on the south of Bagerhat.

It is now known as Morrelganj.

1854

Establishment of Christian Cemetery (Shaheber Kabarkhana) on Cemetery Road at Khulna.

1860

Establishment of Khulna Baptist Mission.

Koylaghat Baptist Church is the oldest church in the city built by Gagan Chandra Dutta, the first chairman of Khulna municipality.

1880

Khulna-Kolkata first steamer service launched.

1882

Establishment of Khulna district (1st June).

Khulna Sadar (Main) Hospital also established.

1884

Establishment of Khulna Municipality.

First train service started in Khulna.

Jora (twin) Shiva temple comes under the jurisdiction of the Railway Authority.

1897

Establishment of Umesh Chandra Public Library.

Founded by Rai Bahadur Kiran Chandra Rai , Zamindar of Narail.

1899

Khulna Municipal Building (old Nagar Bhaban) was built.

1902

Establishment of Hindu Academy, later named BL College .
