Location
Khulna is Bangladesh's third-largest metropolitan city, after Dhaka and Chittagong. It is an important river port and trade centre, it is connected by riverboat, road, and rail to the major cities of the region. The nearest city Jessore is its north-west direction and distance is only 55km. Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh is its north-east and the direct distance is 140km. Whereas Kolkata, the capital of West Bangla (India) only 125km away in west direction.
Eastern part of Khulna city encloses by the Rupsha and Bhairab riverbanks. The western boundary is by the Mayur River. Khulna region is part of the Ganges Delta, the world's largest river delta, consists of a flat alluvial plain intersected by silt laden rivers. The Sundarban , the world's largest mangrove forest, is in the southern part of the delta.
Khulna is famous for shipyards and they are located about 5 km to the south on the Kazibacha River. The city produces steel, cables, milled rice, and flour. Khulna was constituted a municipality in 1884 and now is home to Khulna University of Engineering and Technology (1974), Khulna University (1987), and several other institutions of higher learning.
